Mark 4:35-41, 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Except for the gospel of Mark, we do not read in other gospels that there were other boats following Jesus. Just as Jesus sat down in the boat, they moved into the water and were surrounded by a turbulent storm causing huge waves to rock the boat and water entered the boat.
There is no mention of how many disciples accompanied Jesus. There is only reference of ‘They” and “We”. Many people travel in a boat and the place where the oarsmen stand the leader slept(Jesus). Disciples spent the time in small talk and fun moments. They were well aware of the sea and its waters. We often read about accidents that happened because the driver slept at the seat. With no one to talk to, Jesus fell asleep. Mark 4:33-34, 33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything. Here we can see that Jesus used parables to preach and when alone with disciples He used to explain everything to them. Yet here when they were alone in the boat with Him, there is a breakdown of communication between Jesus and the disciples. The result, Jesus fell asleep. Fearing the storm and the high waves, the disciples awakened Jesus and said that we will drown, notice they didn’t say US. Jesus, is the son of God and hence capable of saving Himself, but they feared for their own lives. Jesus woke up and calmed the sea and the wind. Psalms 107: 29-30, 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
30 They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them to their desired haven.
Jesus asked the disciples why are they afraid even when He is with them. Didn’t they have faith in Him!!! The same question Jesus is asking us: Why are we afraid? Don’t we trust Him???
Same is the condition of our lifeboat, we have slept Jesus at the stern of our boats. Jesus sleeping is in our favor so that we can live and do what we like, isn’t it???? In the middle of turbulent life storms when we are stranded in the middle of the ocean of life, drowning in sin, we forget that Jesus is asleep at the stern of our lifeboat. It is a folly to think that just because Jesus is asleep at the stern our boats would not rock on waters. This incident with the disciples teaches us just that. In the midst of rocky waters, like the disciples we too become terrified, our faith weakens, and everything in front cloudy.Our senses become fogged and we don’t understand what to do or where to go. Disciples awakened Jesus, let us also hand the oars of our life into the hands of Jesus, travel ahead calling on to Him and talking to Him(Prayer).
This incident tells us that even powers of nature listens to the creator. Then how trivial are our problems before Him!!! Have full faith in Him, have complete submission before Him. There were other boats too travelling with Jesus is what we read in Mark. they too escaped from drowning. Even though they were scared for a few moments, due to the call from the disciples the sea is calmed by Jesus like a gentle stream. Our prayer and cry/pleadings does not help us alone, but those around us as well is what this Bible incident tells us. The world is rocked by the sea of terrorism, riots, sexual immorality, corruption, etc. May our prayer filled with faith make our Heavenly Father shower us with Mercy and Grace. Do you pause to think that it is the Lord pushing me left and right when I stray from the right direction and our lifeboats gets rocked to help us realize the truth.
My dear brothers and sisters, what do you do when hit by storms and rocky seas?? Do you find a solution yourself?? Let us pray that at such moment we have the sight to see Jesus at the stern of our boats. That thought itself fills us with faith and strength. Doubt, the thief goes away in His presence.Jesus will look after our boat from doubt, our enemy and thief. The answer to our success/victory is in our own hands. Without a second thought let us hand our lives into His hands. He will safely lead us ashore. Ashore here meanly the heavenly abode.Let us pray for that.
